Plasma Aluminum Level in Chronic Renal Failure

Abstract
Aluminum intoxification has been implicated in the pathogenesis of dialysis dementia, microcytic hypochromic anemia, vitamin D resistant osteomalacia in patients suffering from chronic renal failure. Potential source of aluminum in such patients include tap water used to prepare dailysate and oral phosphate binders. We have studied to observe a level of plasma aluminum in patients with chronic renal failure, the effect of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis on aluminm removal, and the relationship between the level of plasma aluminum and that of serum PTH in chronic renal failure.
The results are summarized as follows:
1) The level of plasma in the patients with chronic renal failure was significantly elevated compared with that of normal controls. (54¡¾19.8 vs 5¡¾0.9 pg/L, P<0. 005)
2) Plasma aluminum concentration was higher in patients managed by hemodialysis than those by peritoneal dialysis. (65¡¾9.6 vs 38¡¾9.7 pg/L, P<0.005)
3) There was no significant correlation between the level of plasma aluminum and serum PTH.
4) No significant change in plasma aluminum concentration was observed during the period of 4hr hemodialysis.
5) The amount of aluminum removed in peritoneal dialysate per day was 310¡¾33 pg/1.
